How to remain free human moral agents in the age of Artificial Intelligence? My claim is that Artificial Intelligence (AI) may affect our moral freedom by creating three kinds of “shifts of actions”. First, AI may reduce our capacity to perform socially relevant activities, and may make our contribution to work-related activities less recognisable and rewarded, thereby affecting our social freedom. Second, AI may reduce our capacity to remain in control of and responsible for our decisions and actions, thereby affecting our free will and moral responsibility. Third, AI may affect our capacity to control governments and (economic) powers, thereby affecting our political freedom. I also claims that it is still possible to promote human moral freedom in the interaction with AI. This requires designing AI systems that help develop and reward human capabilities, strengthen human control and responsibility, and foster democratic procedures and civic virtues.
